Built when skyscrapers and steel framed buildings were just taking off, the Monadnock is an all masonry built throwback, not to mention the tallest solid masonry building in the country. It was commissioned by two brothers who did not trust this newfangled stuff called steel, so they insisted on masonry construction. It's abstract, barely detailed, and seems so modern.
Photo from: Wikipedia

Do you like magazines?

Heck yes! It's both a work in progress and an experiment, so bear with me as I learn how to blog. So, welcome to the vernacular, my first attempt at blogging. Why call this thing "the vernacular?" Good question. I have several reasons. First, I just like the sound of the word... ver-nac-u-lar. 4 syllables, rolls off the tongue well. Second, I like the meaning of the word; informal, native, and in the context of architecture, it has to do with buildings made from locally available materials built in traditional methods and styles. Third, I haven't yet seen a blog called "the vernacular." And fourth, did I mention that I just like the word? Anyway, I hope that this blog keeps you interested. It's not going to be about me, but about things I see and find interesting.
